1. UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY HAS REPORTED THE OCCURRENCE OF EARTHQUAKE OF MAGNITUDE 7.2 ON RICHTER SCALE, SOUTH OF JAVA ON 2 JUNE 94 AT 18.17HRS GMT: LATITUDE 10.2 DEGREES SOUTH, LONGITUDE 113.2 DEGREES EAST. AN AFTERSHOCK OF 6.5 ON RICHTER SCALE FOLLOWED ON 3 JUNE AT 21.07HRS GMT: LATITUDE 10.5 DEGREES SOUTH, LONGITUDE 113.5 DEGREES EAST.

2. TSUNAMI CAUSED BY EARTHQUAKE HAS AFFECTED THE DISTRICTS BANYUWANGI, JEMBER AND TULUNG AGUNG. DHA/UNDP RESIDENT REPRESENT REPORTS: 166 DEAD, 406 INJURED AND 38 MISSING. TOTAL OF 3,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED. ALMOST 500 UNITS OF HOUSING DESTROYED. 245 FISHING BOATS LOST.

3. PROVINCIAL AND DISTRICT AUTHORITIES ARE CARRYING OUT SEARCH AND RESCUE OPERATIONS AND ARE PROVIDING IMMEDIATE RELIEF ASSISTANCE. MINISTER FOR PEOPLE'S WELFARE/CHAIRMAN OF INDONESIAN
NATIONAL DISASTER COUNCIL AND MINISTER FOR SOCIAL AFFAIRS WILL INSPECT DISASTER AREA ON 5 JUNE 94.

4. GOVERNMENT HAS NOT REQUESTED AN APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE.

SITUATION

1.AFFECTED AREA HIT BY HUNDREDS OF AFTERSHOCKS. TWO MAJOR AFTERSHOCKS OCCURRED ON SUNDAY 5 JUNE 1994 (8.44 HRS LOCAL TIME, AT LATITUDE 11.01 DEGREES SOUTH, LONGITUDE 113.39 DEGREES EAST, MAGNITUDE 5.7 ON RICHTER SCALE) AND ON MONDAY 6 JUNE 1994 (2.51 HRS LOCAL TIME AT LATITUDE 11.85 DEGREES SOUTH, LONGITUDE 112.11 DEGREES EAST, MAGNITUDE 6.3 ON RICHTER SCALE).

2.UNDP/DHA RESIDENT COORDINATOR PROVIDES FOLLOWING UPDATE ON THE IMPACT OF THE EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI: 205 PEOPLE DEAD, 23 MISSING AND 428 WOUNDED. 1,387 HOUSES TOTALLY DESTROYED, 342 FISHING BOATS WRECKED OR DAMAGED. 1,479 FAMILIES AFFECTED. THE LARGE MAJORITY OF CASUALTIES AND DAMAGE OCCURRED IN THE DISTRICT OF BANYUWANGI. OTHER AFFECTED DISTRICTS ARE JEMBER, MALANG, BLITAR AND TULUNGAGUNG.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

3.MINISTER COORDINATOR FOR PEOPLE'S WELFARE/CHAIRMAN OF THE INDONESIAN NATIONAL DISASTER COUNCIL (BAKORNAS PB), MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS AND MINISTER OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS RETURNED FROM THEIR VISIT TO THE DISASTER AREA. SEARCH AND RESCUE AS WELL AS EMERGENCY RELIEF EFFORTS CONDUCTED BY LOCAL AUTHORITIES, LOCAL PEOPLE AND NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS, JOINED BY 500 ARMY PERSONNEL AND NAVY SHIPS. MINISTER OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS DONATED EMERGENCY FUND OF RP. 100,000,000 (APPROX. USD 50,000) AND 100 TONS OF RICE. PLEDGES AMOUNTING TO RP. 1,106,000,000 (APPROX.
USD 550,000) CAME FROM PRIVATE SECTOR.

4.THE GOVERNMENT OF INDONESIA WILL NOT MAKE AN APPEAL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE BUT CONTRIBUTIONS FROM INTERESTED DONORS WOULD BE WELCOME.

5.RELIEF ITEMS REQUIRED DURING THE INITIAL EMERGENCY PHASE FOR 1,479 HOUSEHOLDS ARE: EMERGENCY FOOD, FAMILY SIZE TENTS OR PLASTIC SHEETING, CLOTHING, HOUSEHOLD/KITCHEN APPLIANCES AND BUILDING MATERIAL FOR TEMPORARY SHELTER. CASH FOR TRANSPORT OF RELIEF ITEMS IS ALSO NEEDED.

6.THE MINISTER COORDINATOR FOR PEOPLE'S WELFARE/CHAIRMAN OF BAKORNAS PB INDICATED THAT, APART FROM THE URGENT NEED TO TACKLE THE EMERGENCY PHASE, THE REHABILITATION OF FISHING VILLAGES, INCLUDING REHABILITATION OF HOUSES AND OF FISHING BOATS/EQUIPMENT, IS CONSIDERED OF PRIMARY IMPORTANCE. THIS WILL FALL UNDER THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MINISTER FOR PUBLIC WORKS
AND THE MINISTER OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS.

COUNTRY-LEVEL INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

7.UNDP/DHA RESIDENT COORDINATOR MONITORING SITUATION IN CLOSE CONSULTATION WITH GOVERNMENT. A COORDINATION MEETING FOR UN SPECIALIZED AGENCIES AND MULTI/BILATERAL DONORS IN JAKARTA WILL BE HELD AT UNDP OFFICE ON TUESDAY, 7 JUNE 1994. 8.DHA RECOMMENDS CASH CONTRIBUTIONS AS MOST APPROPRIATE AND INVITES DONORS TO CHANNEL FUNDS THROUGH DHA FOR IMMEDIATE RELIEF ASSISTANCE TO THE AFFECTED POPULATION. TRANSFER OF FUNDS SHOULD BE MADE TO DHA ACCOUNT NO. CO-590.160.1 AT THE SWISS BANK CORPORATION, CASE POSTALE 2770, CH 1211 GENEVA 2 WITH REFERENCE: INDONESIA - TSUNAMI, DHA GENEVA.

SITUATION

1.LATEST INFORMATION ON CASUALTIES AND DAMAGE AS REPORTED BY THE PROVINCIAL AUTHORITIES: 212 PEOPLE DEAD, 23 MISSING AND 431 WOUNDED, 1,422 HOUSES DESTROYED, 342 FISHING BOATS WRECKED OR
DAMAGED. A TOTAL OF 1,567 FAMILIES ARE AFFECTED.

COUNTRY-LEVEL INTERNATIONAL RESPONSE

2.A COORDINATION MEETING FOR UN SPECIALIZED AGENCIES AND MULTI/BILATERAL DONORS WAS HELD AT THE UNDP OFFICE IN JAKARTA ON TUESDAY, 7 JUNE 1994. THE DIRECTOR FOR DISASTER AFFAIRS, MINISTRY OF SOCIAL AFFAIRS, ATTENDED THE MEETING AND INDICATED THAT, WHILE RELIEF ACTIVITIES AND CLEARANCE OF DEBRIS CONTINUE, PLANS FOR REHABILITATION AND RECONSTRUCTION WILL BE COMPLETED WITHIN ONE MONTH AFTER OCCURRENCE OF THE DISASTER.

3.DHA CASH GRANT OF USD 30,000 BEING USED FOR LOCAL PURCHASE OF FOOD, CLOTHING, BLANKETS, AND KITCHEN/HOUSEHOLD UTENSILS.

4.DHA INVITES DONORS TO CHANNEL FUNDS THROUGH DHA FOR RELIEF ASSISTANCE TO THE AFFECTED POPULATION. FUNDS ARE SPENT IN COORDINATION WITH RELEVANT ORGANIZATIONS OF THE UN SYSTEM, AND DHA PROVIDES DONOR GOVERNMENTS WITH A WRITTEN CONFIRMATION OF THEIR USE.

5.TRANSFER OF FUNDS SHOULD BE MADE TO DHA ACCOUNT NO. CO-590.160.1 AT THE SWISS BANK CORPORATION, CASE POSTALE 2770, CH 1211 GENEVA 2 WITH THE FOLLOWING REFERENCE: INDONESIA - TSUNAMI, DHA GENEVA.

SITUATION

1. LATEST STATISTICS ON CASUALTIES AND DAMAGE REPORTED AS OF 15 JUNE 1994 ARE AS FOLLOWS:

- 222 PEOPLE DEAD, 17 MISSING AND 440 WOUNDED

- 1,355 HOUSES DESTROYED, 102 SEVERELY DAMAGED AND 15 SLIGHTLY DAMAGED

- 768 FISHING BOATS WRECKED OR DAMAGED

2. EARTHQUAKE/TSUNAMI AFFECTED 1,656 HOUSEHOLDS. EST. TOTAL LOSS IS RP. 4.7 BILLION (APPROX. USD 2.2 MILLION).

3. A MAJOR AFTERSHOCK OCCURRED TUESDAY, 14 JUNE, AT 04.04 HOURS LOCAL TIME (LATITUDE 10.62 DEG. SOUTH, LONGITUDE 113.46 DEG. EAST, DEPTH 137 KM, MAGNITUDE 5.9 ON RICHTER SCALE). NO TSUNAMI, CASUALTIES OR DAMAGE WERE REPORTED FOLLOWING THIS AFTERSHOCK.

NATIONAL RESPONSE

4. PRESIDENT SUHARTO VISITED AFFECTED AREA TUESDAY, 14 JUNE. AFFECTED FAMILIES EMPHASIZED THEIR WISH TO REMAIN IN FORMER RESIDENTIAL AREA AND NOT BE RELOCATED. THE PRESIDENT INSTRUCTED THAT PROPER HOUSING BE MADE AVAILABLE IN TIMELY MANNER AS WELL AS CREDIT SCHEMES TO REPLACE LOST FISHING BOATS AND THUS FACILITATE RESUMPTION OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES.

5. INDONESIAN RED CROSS, ASSISTED BY IFRC RELIEF DELEGATE ON MISSION FROM MANILA, DEVELOPED PLAN OF ACTION TO CONTINUE ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME IN AFFECTED AREA FOR NEXT 2 MONTHS. PROGRAMME WILL INCLUDE COUNSELING AND TRAUMA SUPPORT, OPERATING OF FIELD KITCHENS (FOOD TO BE PROVIDED BY GOVT), DISTRIBUTION OF RELIEF SUPPLIES AND ASSISTANCE IN RECONSTRUCTION.
