Working on Fox Pilot, “The Break.”

I was teaching surfing on Oahu, staying in Randal Kleiser's Blue Lagoon house on the North Shore.

Rick Delago and John Stockwell showed up to scout locations and finish casting for the Fox pilot, "The Break", produced by Brian Grazer. The Blue Crush team was together again, taking advantage of their connections to the hard-core underground North Shore surf scene.

I was cast as the drug-dealing-pipline-surfing villian, Chris Candrell. I had to shave my head, and surf Pipeline everyday.

The team was Brian Keaulana, Don King, Sonny Miller -- the best water safety surf film makers on the planet. With Kai Garcia "Kaiborg" - Chava, Kala Alexander, Makua Rothman, Braden Dias, Perry Dane, Jason Mags, Jaime Sterling, Terry Ahue, Noah Johnson and Derrick Doerner surfing and on Jetskis providing protection and opportunity.

Chris Malloy was my stunt partner in the wipeout at Pipeline. We did not wear leashes. We surfed Pipeline every day for 3 weeks in March, from 5 to 15 feet in clean conditions, with the best surfers in the world, the best photographers and the most capable safety team anywhere -- it was another dream come true. The best job in the world.
I am again grateful to the North Shore Crew for showing me how to paddle out, where to sit and letting me go on some of the best waves on the planet.

It's all about safety while filming stunts. We would have group safety meetings every morning in the park before going out to Pipeline. Brian Keaulana has taught me so much over the years. Kai taught me how the lineup works. Braden Dias taught me wave selection and what to do when caught inside. Chris Malloy was so generous and cool, it was a pleasure fighting him in the impact zone.

I'll never forget Makua Rothman. He was up to my knee when I first met him while filming "The North Shore" with his father, Eddie. This year he won over $60,000.00 for towing into an estimated 66 ft. wave at Jaws on Maui -- and he was completely stoked to surf 4-6 ft. Pipeline or bodysurf 3-5 ft. Pupukea Sandbar. He shows the same humility and gratitude towards the ocean in all its various glory.

Basically, I got schooled for 3 weeks by the best, in the best conditions. Nobody got hurt and we got some great footage.
Check it out. Here is a four minute clip:
